Pink Floyd - Oh By The Way: European Box Set

EMICD-11228 (2007)

16 CD box set - being 14 studio albums including 2 doubles.

According to Pink Floyd Brain Damage site there were a few glitches with this release, the most notable being a misprinting of the inner bag for the second CD in "The Wall".

There are also cases of an album being missed out and duplicates in their places.

The later Japanese release of this box set is basically identical to this box set.

Poor quality fakes exist for this set - more details below.

The original Japanese individual releases are regarded as being of a much higher quality to either of these box sets.

The covers and contents of this box set are generally regareded as not of the same high quality standard as the original EMI Toshiba Japanese releases.

That is not to say these are sub-standard - simply that if you own one or more of the earlier Japanese releases you may find this box set disappointing.

A comparison of "Atom Heart Mother" is shown here. The Japanese is a matt cover (inside and out) and is generally brighter than the EU version. This is particularly notable on the inside of the gatefold. The pasture and cows are clearly visible in the Japanese especially compared to the EU version but, conversely there is more detail in the clouds for the (darker) EU version.

You could also argue that the darker (bluer) sky on the EU version shows more of the purple (development fault?) in the sky - but then perhaps the sun was setting / rising (as indicated in the inside of the gatefold).

Perhaps neither is "better" just "different" as was often the case when comparing different prints from around the world even when the album was first released.
